Choosing Artwork For Your Home

Choosing Artwork For Your Home

As I mentioned in a previous blog, people want art to mean something to them. So when I’m working with a client, art selection is a huge factor. They want to have a connection to the artwork, i.e., what’s the significance behind it? Does it remind them of somewhere they have been? Does it set a mood?  Emotionally connecting with the artwork in their home is always very significant and should be for you too.

Placing Your Artwork

After selecting the perfect piece of art, it should be placed perfectly. A personal tip of mine is to hang the art at eye level. It helps impact your space in such a great way. Some other advice would be to look at some of your favorite rooms in your home and see if the artwork matches the upholstery or other fabrics or pieces in the room. When it does, it’s such a great feeling to see how everything correlated with one another and truly compliments every aspect within the room. When it doesn’t, that’ll help inspire you to ask yourself what colors would help compliment the room and go out and find that artwork that’ll help bring the room together in a cohesive way.

I believe the larger the piece of art, the bigger the impact will be. It isn’t always necessary to go big, but it brings the room alive when you do. I love taking a space with a neutral palette and making it into a showstopper by adding art with bold colors or bold patterns. You can also do this by using bold colors and patterns on the pillows and accessories, but the art makes an immense impact. I want there to always be a conversation piece in the room, and the art can be this.

Let’s take the great room, for example, because great rooms need great art, amiright? I love selecting from vendors that allow me to custom size the art. I have made art as tall as 9’ and love splitting the art into multiple pieces to be used on walls that call for more extensive art.

Large homes and projects require a lot of art, and making the selections, so nothing is repeated, is the biggest hurdle to overcome when selecting art for a project. This is why I am always on the lookout for new and exciting art. Art has to touch my heart before I expect it to touch my client’s heart.  I also love using multiple pieces of art to make a significant impact. I like to be creative with the art in the homes I design. If you know me, you know I want to split up a single piece of artwork into multiple pieces to truly take advantage of my client’s wall space.

Using Different Types of Artwork

I love using different types of artwork in my projects, such as canvas, giclee, mirrors, art framed with glass, architectural elements, and sculptures. Having a mixture and blend of the different types of art gives a home a more curated look. Art should reflect your personality, so look at the overall color palette of the room. Is it a warm color palette, or is it a cool color palette? If you have more of a monochromatic color palette, look for color pieces of artwork, so it truly makes an impact. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Another question to ask yourself is the longevity of the room. For example, how long will you be using the space? Is it for your child? Will they outgrow the artwork you’re considering utilizing?

These are important questions I ask my client’s and I’ll usually give them different options so they can see for themselves the different types of art and ask themselves what sort of future they want the room to have. It’s inspiring to see my clients ponder those types of questions and come to their conclusions. They begin to see just how significant artwork can be in a room and the impact it can have. We all interpret art differently. Different pieces invoke different emotions. So it’s always crucial for me to ask those types of questions. It helps me better understand my client and their thought process to achieve the best design for them and their home.
